Our aim is to help people avoid the most common scams. The truth is you can’t be too careful.
Reminder – 5 top tips
- It seems too good to be true – for example, scammers pretending to be energy companies to lure people into “too good to be true” deals
- You suspect you’re not dealing with a real company or a genuine person – take a moment to step back and double-check
- You’re being pressured to transfer money quickly
- It’s an unusual payment method – like by an iTunes voucher or a transfer service
- They want personal information such as passwords, PINs or other verification codes.
Check if something might be a scam
If you’ve been scammed
- Talk to your bank
Or your card company immediately if you’ve handed over any financial and sensitive information or made a payment. - Report to Citizens Advice
Offline scams (using the telephone, post or coming to your door) through Citizens Advice website or call 0808 223 1133.
Online scams through Scams Action service either online or on 0808 250 5050. - Report Text scams
Report to your mobile phone provider by forwarding it to 7726. - Report to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
