Why Citizens Advice?
So why did I choose to volunteer at Citizens Advice Epsom & Ewell? Since my first week at Citizens Advice in August 2023, I knew it would be filled with opportunities for learning and new experiences.
It started with a goal to make a positive difference in the lives of members of the community. I also wanted to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting for my work placement year. Citizens Advice has a reputation for providing fundamental support and guidance to individuals facing complex challenges. This resonated deeply with me. The opportunity to assist clients navigating financial and social issues also aligned strongly with my academic interests and personal values.
Volunteering is shaping my academic and professional development
As a student volunteer at Citizens Advice, I am continually expanding my skills and knowledge base in tangible ways that have inspired my professional development. Engaging with clients from diverse backgrounds and various walks of life has sharpened my communication and interpersonal skills. I have learned a lot about how to convey intricate information and address client concerns.
This practical experience has given me a range of invaluable technical skills. Just to name a few: client management, case recording, customer service, negotiation; and handling specialised queries from housing to employment, energy queries and many more.
Reflecting on the highlights of volunteering at Citizens Advice
The most rewarding aspect for me lies in the impact on the lives of individuals seeking guidance and support. Witnessing clients’ relief and gratitude reaffirms the significance of our work as volunteers.
On-boarding as a new volunteer into a welcoming and supportive environment was also a highlight. Interacting daily with dedicated colleagues has enriched my learning and made my work placement even more rewarding and enjoyable. (That’s not to mention the ongoing supply of sweet treats and hot drinks to keep you fuelled throughout the day!)
Skills, insights, connections
My time as a student volunteer so far has been a fulfilling and enlightening experience. Through my involvement with Citizens Advice, I have gained invaluable skills, insights and connections that will shape my future academic and professional endeavours.
I am very grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to the Citizens Advice mission to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
